Triple Talaq Bill Status in Rajya Sabha: Illegal but ongoing

The Muslim woman has long suffered injustice at the hands of the religion-sanctioned Triple Talaq custom. Recently, the Supreme Court tried to ban it. And they did delegalize it. But the ministers in the Rajya Sabha have said that this has had no effect. Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad moved the Triple Talaq Bill on Tuesday. He claimed that the bill has been brought in to ensure justice for Muslim women. It was insisted him that the bill should not be seen through a political prism. There were no ulterior motives accompanied with it.

He urged members to approve ‘The Muslim Woman (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019’. The minister said that the practice of Triple Talaq was still ongoing. The judgment of the Supreme Court has had no lasting effect. While moving the bill, the Law Minister said, “This issue should not be seen through a political prism or vote-bank politics. This is a question of humanity. This is for ensuring justice to women, dignity, and empowerment to women and to ensure gender dignity and equality.”

After the Supreme Court judgment banned Triple Talaq, 574 cases of the illegal practice have been reported and come under the notice of the government. He also added that after the last ordinance issued the government criminalizing the practice, as many as 101 cases have come to light.

He said, “The judgment has come, but no action on triple talaq has been taken. That is why we have brought this law because the law is deterrence.”

Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the practice of Talaq has been banned in more than 20 Islamic countries. But this has not happened in secular India due to one reason or another.

What do you think about the Triple Talaq Bill? Will it help alleviate the situation of the Muslim woman?
